The present study examined the sub-concepts of each level of family differentiation under the condition of a multiple dimensional bi-polar structure. As the family differentiation is separated by two independernt dimensions involving separateness and connectedness, it was hypothesized that high level of family differentiation would show both connectedness and separateness, medium level would show both connectedness and fusion or separatenessa and cut-off, and low level would show both fusion and cut-off. These hypotheses were supported, and the limitation inthe authors¡¯ previous study (Nam & Han, 1999) was also complemented through this study. Therefore, this study suggests that family differentiation can be clearly explained better by the two independent bi-polar dimensions than by the uni-dimension.
